Brief History of Kathmandu
According to the Swayambhu Puran, Kathmandu was a deep lake, which was full of snakes and was called Nagdaha. Then, the mighty Bodhisattva Manjushree came with his sword and cut the drain with his sword and all the water was evacuated out. After the water is drained out, Manjushree established a city named Manjupattan, and Dharmakar was made the ruler of the valley.
After some years, a demon called Banasura closed the outlet, and the valley again turned into a lake. Seeing this, Lord Krishna came to Nepal with his cowherds and killed Banasura and again drained out the water by cutting the edge of Chobhar Hill with his Sudarshan Chakra. After cutting the edge, the Kathmandu Valley was free from water and Krishna made Bhuktaman the King of Nepal (one of the cowherds).
